FPV Propeller Guide: Size, Pitch, Material and Blade Count
CSKYUAV is a China-based FPV parts manufacturer with 10+ years in the drone industry, producing propellers, frames, motors and camera systems factory-direct with wholesale and ODM/OEM support. An FPV propeller is the only part of your drone that touches the air, so it decides thrust, efficiency, top speed, control feel and even battery life. Four parameters matter most: diameter (size), pitch, material and blade count. As a starting rule: larger props produce more thrust but need lower motor KV; higher pitch pushes more air per revolution and raises top speed at the cost of efficiency; stiffer materials like PC or glass-fiber nylon keep their shape at high RPM and prevent flutter; and adding a third blade increases grip for freestyle punch at the price of efficiency.
Propeller Size: Diameter and Pitch Numbers Explained
Propeller labels follow the pattern “diameter × pitch × blade count”. A “7X4X3” prop is 7 inches in diameter, has a 4-inch pitch and three blades. Diameter controls how much air the prop can grab, which is why larger props are paired with bigger frames and slower-turning motors. Pitch controls how far the prop would travel forward in one full rotation if air were solid — more pitch means a faster “bite” of air, higher top speed, but higher load on the motor and battery.
For 7-inch long-range and freestyle builds, common sizes are 7x4x3 and 7×3.5×3. A steeper prop such as the HQProp J75 7050 adds pace for X8 and cinelifter setups, while the lower-pitch HQProp 7040 keeps current draw reasonable for standard LR7 quads.
Blade Count: 2-Blade vs 3-Blade
Why most FPV quads use three blades
Three-blade props are the FPV default. The third blade adds surface area, which translates into more instant thrust — exactly what freestyle pilots want for snap flips and recovery from a dive. The trade-off is efficiency: an extra blade increases drag and current draw, so the same battery drains a little faster.
2-inch micro whoops and small cinewhoops also use 3-blade sets. The CaddxFPV HQ 3-blade propeller set and the 2-inch HQProp T2X2X3 with T-mount are typical replacements for whoop-class motors with T-mount shafts.
When two blades are the better tool
Two-blade props spin true at high RPM with less vibration, and they are more efficient in cruise. They suit fixed-wing planes, camera drones that fly straight and level, and some long-endurance multirotors. For an aggressive freestyle quad, however, the extra grip of a third blade is usually worth the efficiency loss.
Propeller Materials: PC, Glass-Fiber Nylon and More
Material choice determines stiffness, durability and how the prop behaves at speed.
- Polycarbonate (PC): the standard for modern FPV freestyle props. Stiff, light and predictable, PC holds its shape at high RPM, which keeps the quad locked in. The Gemfan Flash 7040 PC and Gemfan PC 7035 are examples of reinforced PC props built for 7-inch freestyle and long-range.
- Glass-fiber nylon: tougher and more flexible than PC, so it survives crashes and gate hits better. The flexibility costs a little efficiency at top RPM. Sizes range from small multirotor sets up to large props like the HQProp 9050, HQProp 10X5X3 and the 15-inch HQ 1507 series for heavy and X-class platforms.
- Carbon composites and others: used in niche applications where maximum stiffness matters; they are brittle on impact and rarely seen on freestyle quads.
The glass-fiber nylon HQProp 8037 and the HQ 1507 15-inch show how the same base material is tuned for very different airframes.
Matching Props to Frame Size and Motor KV
Prop choice and motor choice are two halves of the same decision. Low KV motors swing large props; high KV motors need smaller ones. If you raise prop diameter or pitch, motor load rises, so you must lower KV or accept hotter motors and shorter flights. This is why 5-inch freestyle quads run 5-inch props on 1700–2000 KV motors, 7-inch long-range rigs run 7-inch props on 1400–1800 KV, and 10-inch+ platforms run larger props on very low KV motors.
For a classic 7-inch build, a 7x4x3 or 7×3.5×3 set like the Gemfan 7035 balances thrust and endurance. Cinelifter and X8 builds move up to 8–10 inch props: the HQProp 8037 and HQProp 10X5X3 are natural candidates there, while a 10-inch marco quad often pairs with the fiber-nylon Gemfan 1050-3.
CW/CCW Pairs and Mounting Types
Props always come in CW and CCW pairs because the motors on opposite corners of a quad spin in opposite directions to cancel torque. Buy sets labelled “2CW + 2CCW” for a quad, or “4CW + 4CCW” for an X8. Mounting systems matter too: most modern quads use the standard 5mm shaft with M5 nut, while whoop motors and some micro setups use a T-mount shaft where the prop presses onto a splined post — the HQProp T2X2X3 is made for exactly that.
Always replace a prop in pairs (or full sets) to keep the quad balanced. A single fresh prop on an old set creates vibration that the gyro and filters fight for the entire flight.
Propeller Wear: When to Replace
Props are consumables. The signs that a prop needs replacing: nicks and cracks from crashes, a white stress mark at the hub, visible wobble at the tip at idle, or a drone that suddenly vibrates, sounds raspy, or flies less locked-in than before. Even a tiny chip on the leading edge costs efficiency and smoothness. Serious pilots replace props after any hard crash and inspect them before every pack.
Spinning a damaged prop at full throttle is also a safety risk: a blade can shed mid-flight. Check the hub for hairline cracks, torque the nut correctly, and store spares out of sunlight, which degrades both PC and nylon.
Propellers vs Efficiency: Flight Time and Battery
Because props convert battery energy into thrust, prop choice directly affects endurance. At the same diameter, a lower-pitch prop unloads the motors and stretches flight time; a steeper pitch or an extra blade shortens it in exchange for punch. For long-range missions, pilots often drop a blade count or pitch step to gain minutes, accepting softer acceleration. For freestyle, the opposite trade makes sense.
Whether you optimize for range or for performance, replace worn props and keep every prop in the set identical — this is one of the cheapest and most effective flight-time improvements available.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my props are on the right way?
Check the blade shape: the raised, curved side of the blade faces up, and the marked CW/CCW label must match the spin direction of the motor it sits on. Most FPV stacks list motor directions in the Betaflight or inav motor tab.
Can I mix 2-blade and 3-blade props on one quad?
No. All four props must be identical in size, pitch, material and blade count. Mixed props unbalance the quad, create vibration and make tuning impossible.
What pitch should I choose for long-range flying?
Lower pitch, such as 7×3.5 instead of 7×4, unloads the motors and improves endurance. Choose steeper pitch only if you need top speed and can accept reduced flight time.
Are glass-fiber nylon props better than PC?
Neither is universally better. PC props are stiffer and more consistent for freestyle; glass-fiber nylon props bend more under impact and survive gate and crash hits better. Match the material to your flying style.
Do props affect battery drain much?
Yes. Steeper pitch, larger diameter and extra blades all increase current draw. If battery life matters more than punch, step down one pitch or blade count.
Summary
Propeller selection is a balance of diameter, pitch, material and blade count that must match your frame size and motor KV. Use PC props with three blades for freestyle punch, fiber-glass nylon for crash resistance, lower pitch for endurance, and steeper pitch for speed — then replace them before they are visibly worn. CSKYUAV supplies propellers and complete drone parts factory-direct with wholesale pricing, MOQ support and ODM/OEM customization. Send us your frame and motor list, and our engineers will recommend the exact prop set for your target flight time and handling.
